5 Signs Your Champaign-Urbana Roof Needs Attention Before Winter
Brad Shaner · July 5, 2026
Central Illinois winters are hard on roofs. These are the five warning signs worth catching now, before a small issue becomes an emergency leak in January.
You do not need to climb on the roof to spot trouble. Most of the early warning signs are visible from the ground or the attic, and catching them before winter saves money and stress.
1. Granules in your gutters
Shingle granules collecting in gutters or at downspout splash blocks mean the surface is wearing thin. It is one of the earliest signs a roof is aging.
2. Curling, cracking, or buckling shingles
Shingles should lie flat. When edges curl or corners lift, they are losing flexibility and letting water find the seams.
3. Interior stains or attic daylight
Water stains on ceilings, or daylight visible through the attic roof boards, point to a breach that will only widen under snow load.
4. Flashing that has pulled or rusted
Chimneys, valleys, and vent boots are where most leaks start. Loose or rusted flashing is a repair now, not a replacement later, if you catch it.
5. A roof past the 15-year mark
Age alone is not a death sentence, but a roof in its second decade deserves an inspection before winter. Many qualify for rejuvenation instead of replacement.
If any of these sound familiar, a free inspection tells you exactly where your roof stands. Call (217) 851-4959 and we will take a look.
